Boker Jive

Written by

There are a few companies I consider the big dogs—those that have been in the game for ages and continue to produce outstanding cutlery year after year. One of those behemoths is Boker. With roots dating back to the 17th century, Boker’s history is as rich as its catalog. Their Solingen-made blades showcase traditional craftsmanship, while the Boker Plus line focuses on modern, innovative designs through collaborations with renowned designers.

Today, we're looking at a knife that’s been around for a bit but never quite got the fanfare it deserved. The Boker Plus Jive, designed by Brian Efros, is a sleek, high-quality EDC folder with clean lines and an ergonomic build. At 7.17 inches overall with a 2.95-inch blade made from D2 steel, it’s compact yet fully capable. The clip point blade gives it a distinct mini-Bowie look, adding character to an otherwise understated design.

A Hefty, Well-Balanced Build

The Jive is surprisingly heavy for its size, weighing in at 4.73 ounces. That’s largely due to its solid titanium handles. Many companies opt for internal milling to reduce weight, but Boker left these slabs chunky. It gives the knife a real sense of mass and quality—something people often associate with durability. Crazy notion, huh?

Visually, the Jive is all about sexy curves—no harsh lines in sight. Boker put in the effort to make this knife as ergonomic as possible. The decorative milling on the handle reminds me of bamboo—not sure why, but it’s there. The overall look is minimalistic, with plain satin titanium scales and simple hardware. No flashy accents, no unnecessary embellishments. It reminds me of a Chris Reeve knife—clean, elegant, and made for business.

Ergonomics and Comfort

When it comes to ergonomics, the Jive is dialed in nicely. The generous finger groove allows for easy lock bar access, and I appreciate that the frame lock sits flush with the show side. Many knives have a height difference here for easier disengagement, but that can create discomfort when gripping tightly. Boker chose to keep it even, and it feels great in hand. The gentle handle curve nestles naturally into your grip, and despite the lack of texturing or jimping, the knife doesn’t need it. It’s a bulky brute, but a refined and elegant one.

The titanium pocket clip is another well-executed detail. Simple, comfortable in the palm, and practically invisible when gripping the knife. A well-designed clip can make or break the carry experience, and this one hits the mark.

Blade and Performance

The clip point blade gives the Jive a unique presence. It has a pronounced tip, great for precision tasks like picking out splinters, detail cutting, or stabbing that Amazon box that refuses to open. The blade has a generous belly, almost a subtle recurve, making it great for everyday slicing tasks. Even with its thick stock, the Jive slices well.

Boker went with a flat grind, which has become the industry standard for a balance of strength and cutting performance. While I’d love to see a hollow grind version for extra slicing prowess, the flat grind likely adds some durability—so no real complaints.

Deployment and Lockup

Opening the Jive is handled by oversized thumb studs, which fit the knife’s rugged theme. Everything about the Jive feels tough—if I didn’t know better, I’d think it was a Zero Tolerance knife. The reinforced frame lock provides solid lockup, keeping the blade secure without any play.

Final Thoughts

The Boker Jive never got the attention it deserved when it first dropped, but it’s a knife that delivers in every way. Simple in appearance, beautifully executed in function—it’s proof that sometimes, less is more. If you appreciate a rugged yet refined design with exceptional ergonomics and a classic blade shape, the Jive is a worthy addition to any collection.
