Giant Mouse Iona V2

Written by

The GiantMouse ACE Iona V2 takes the beloved design of its predecessor and transforms it into a strong, reliable outdoor companion. Featuring a wider CPM Magnacut blade, a longer ergonomic handle, enhanced spine jimping, and improved lockbar access, this knife excels in both form and function.

Having reviewed the GiantMouse ACE Grand, I was eager to dive into another offering from this renowned brand. GiantMouse, the brainchild of Danish designers Jens Ansø and Jesper Voxnaes, is celebrated for its no-nonsense designs that prioritize performance and ergonomics. The Iona V2 carries their signature design ethos, standing as a practical yet stylish outdoor tool.

Handle Design:

The Iona V2’s handle standouts out, designed with a curve that feels reminiscent of a black powder pistol grip. While different from what I typically see, it sits comfortably in hand, hugging the fingers for a secure grip. Crafted from green canvas Micarta, the handle has a natural texture that I’ve always appreciated. Micarta not only feels great to the touch but also develops character over time as it absorbs oils from your hands.

The handle showcases stepped milling, offering additional texture without being intrusive. GiantMouse opted for minimal jimping, with only small sections on the lock and blade spine, contributing to a clean and streamlined appearance while ensuring adequate grip where it counts.

Blade Performance:

The blade, made from CPM Magnacut steel and stonewashed, features a drop-point profile with a broad belly. This design, reminiscent of a Sodbuster or Ontario RAT1, excels in slicing tasks and makes it particularly suited for jobs like skinning small game.

The full flat grind maximizes cutting efficiency, while the steel’s exceptional edge retention keeps the blade performing through demanding tasks. GiantMouse’s heat treatment of Magnacut is spot on and it shows through in performance. Though the tip isn’t overly pronounced, it’s versatile enough for precision work.

Clip and Carry:

GiantMouse consistently does an excellent job with their clip design, providing great retention and adapting to various carry materials. It’s low-profile and doesn’t create any discomfort when gripping the knife—a practical and thoughtful touch.

Practical Touches:

The enhanced spine jimping offers better control for delicate or demanding tasks, while the improved lockbar access allows for quick and easy operation, even with gloves. These small adjustments elevate the Iona V2’s usability, making it a reliable partner for outdoor adventures.

Final Thoughts:

The GiantMouse ACE Iona V2 takes the aesthetics and spirit of the original Iona and evolves it into a tool built for the outdoors. Its ergonomic handle, durable blade, and thoughtful features make it a fantastic option for EDC or tackling outdoor challenges. Whether you’re field dressing small game or handling everyday tasks, the Iona V2 offers a seamless blend of style, comfort, and functionality. GiantMouse has once again proven why it holds a special place in the hearts of knife enthusiasts.
